About Aberystwyth Lodge 1072
Over 150 years of brotherhood, tradition, and service in the heart of Aberystwyth.
Our History
Aberystwyth Lodge No. 1072 was consecrated in 1872, making it one of the longest-established Masonic lodges in mid-Wales. From its earliest meetings in the town's historic buildings to its present home, the Lodge has been a constant and proud presence in the life of Aberystwyth.
Through two World Wars, periods of great social change, and the evolving life of the town, our members have upheld the same principles that guided the Lodge's founders — integrity, friendship, respect, and service to the wider community.
Today the Lodge continues to meet regularly, welcoming men of good character who wish to join a brotherhood with deep roots, a living tradition, and a genuine commitment to making a difference.
What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. It teaches self-improvement and social betterment through participation in a progression of ceremonies.
Members are taught its principles by a series of ritual dramas, which follow ancient forms and use stonemasons' customs and tools as allegorical guides. The three great principles of Freemasonry are Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.
Freemasonry traces its roots to the medieval stonemasons who built Britain’s great cathedrals and castles. Over time, their customs and symbols inspired a more philosophical form of membership, attracting men who were interested in moral ideas as well as craft traditions. The first organised step toward modern Freemasonry came in 1717, when four London lodges met at the Goose and Gridiron Tavern and agreed to form a Grand Lodge — the first of its kind anywhere in the world. From that moment, Freemasonry began to take on the structure, continuity, and shared practices that shaped the fraternity as we know it today. In England and Wales, Freemasonry is governed by the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE), founded in 1717. Aberystwyth Lodge 1072 is a proud member lodge under the Province of West Wales. A Masonic Lodge meeting is usually split into two parts. First, there are normal administrative procedures such as: • Minutes of the previous meeting • Proposing and balloting for new members • Discussing and voting on the annual accounts • Masonic news and correspondence • News about charitable work Second, there are the ceremonies for: • Admitting new members, undertaking the ritual degrees which are unique and fundamental to what makes Freemasonry special. • The annual installation of the Master of the Lodge and his officers which is a grand affair, attended by Freemasons from near and far and always attended by the Provincial Masonic Team.
